How To Buy Antique Engagement Rings

There are as many good reasons to consider purchasing an antique engagement ring as there are reasons for deciding when to pop the question. While modern day jewelers struggle to offer customers something unique and contemporary, the bride-to-be may be more inclined to appreciate the style and inherent charm of an antique. Another perfectly acceptable reason for purchasing antique engagement rings is they often offer buyers a better quality diamond at a lower price than purchasing a new ring.

Before beginning your search for the perfect wedding ring, it is best to ask yourself a few questions.

Do you know about the four C's?

The four C's are the criteria professionals use to determine the value of a diamond.

"Clarity takes into account the number, character, and visibility of flaws within the stone. These are often referred to as inclusions. The fewer inclusions, the better the quality of the stone."

Carat is the size or weight of the diamond. The larger the stone, the higher the cost. An advantage to buying antique engagement rings is that in the 1930s and 1940s jewelers often compensated for a smaller sized diamond by setting it in an intricately designed white gold, square-shaped box. These made the stone appear larger.

"Color is a matter of taste. Modern-day standards put a higher value on a clear diamonds, as a rule. In the past, buyers wanted their diamonds to reflect a rainbow of colors, soft pinks, yellow, or green tints. While colored diamonds are still available today, they were considered more valuable in the past. It is also important to note that many of the modern colored diamonds are artificially altered to enhance the color."

Cut is also a matter of taste and another reason antique engagement rings may be the best answer. Over the years, the preference of cut has changed. Additionally, a laser now cuts most diamonds; whereas older stones were normally cut by hand, giving them a more customized, romantic look.

What is the difference between an antique ring and an estate ring?

Antique rings normally refer to rings that are over 50 years old. Rings less than 50 years old and purchased used are considered as estate rings.

What are the styles of different eras?

Victorian Era (1835-1900) - Victorian era antique engagement rings featured diamonds or pearls set in yellow or rose gold. The ring styles varied from simple elegance to intricate detail. Many settings featured rows of diamonds that were cut with an extra facet in the bottom of the stone. This was known as a mine cut.

Edwardian Era (1900-1920) - With the invention of the oxyacetylene torch, platinum became the preferred metal for the period. The wedding bands were often crafted with lacy and pierced shapes, milgraining, filigree detail, and scrollwork. Rose-cut diamonds and sapphires were the preferred stones.

Art Deco Era (1920-1930) - Art Deco antique engagement rings feature a streamlined geometric look. They also reflect Egyptian, Asian, and Native American cultures. These rings were often made of platinum featured colorful, contrasting gemstones as well as diamonds.

Where can antique engagement rings be purchased?

Antique engagement rings can be purchased in a number of places: antique stores, estate sales, pawn shops, auctions, and there select vendors online and larger cities who specialize in the purchase and resale of antique jewelry. No matter where you purchase your engagement rings, remember to get a full description of your purchase in writing and look to vendors who offer a written returns policy. You may also ask if the jewelry comes with a certified gemologists report, which provides optimal proof that the jewelry is as described.

Lighting Tips In A Contemporary Home

Lighting Tips In A Contemporary Home

Submitted By: B. Williams

Lighting is a design element that you rarely notice. Because of the simple and elegant look of a contemporary room, good use of light is extremely important. The use of light in contemporary design can influence the overall look of a room just as much as the use of color. While the design of the lamp is important in any home decorating style, in a contemporary room the illumination of light itself is an essential design element.

One of the most common types of lighting in contemporary design is recessed lighting. Recessed lighting offers many different benefits. Recessed lighting can illuminate an entire room without disturbing the flow of the room. Adjustable recessed lighting can also be angled to highlight design elements such as a painting or other focal point.

If you have a dark corner that can't be illuminated without interfering with the design of the room, consider using an adjustable uplight. These lights are designed to sit on the floor, with the light illuminating the darkened area.

Other contemporary light fixtures such as lamps and chandeliers can be used in a couple of different ways. You can choose light fixtures that have a simple design, so as to blend in with the rest of the room. Light fixtures that are designed to be a focal point, such as those with a dramatic color or shape, can add a creative pop to an otherwise streamlined room.

No matter what type of lighting you choose to use in your home, a great way to customize it for any occasion is to install dimmer switches. By using dimmer switches, you can create the perfect lighting for anything from an intimate dinner to a festive family gathering.

Much like color, light itself has different qualities and can create different moods. The most versatile and clear light is halogen. Halogen works very well with contemporary design because of the bright and simple quality of the light it creates. Halogen light is very bright, so should always be used with a dimmer switch. Incandescent, or traditional, light bulbs will cast a softer, warmer light that is flattering to the skin. Using incandescent light in the bedrooms and dining room can create a more comfortable and intimate mood.

Each room should be lighted based upon what the room is used for as well as how often it is used. The rooms where your family gathers every day to eat, talk and play should be more brightly lit. Brightly lit rooms create an energetic and positive mood. Rooms that are designed to unwind in, such as a bedroom or sitting area should be more softly lit in order to encourage relaxation and comfort.

Rooms that aren't used often should have variable levels of lighting. Soft lighting will illuminate the room nicely while it's not in use. Using minimal lighting in rooms not in use can also keep children and pets from being drawn to the room.

Light, when used properly, will be something that you barely even notice. Using the right type of light in each room will make the design of your entire home come together.

The Home Decorator???s Guide to Wall Repairs

Everybody has had one or two. You know, those little hole or indentations in the walls ??? behind a door, or behind a picture. If you live in a home, hang a picture, or have children ??? accidents happen! But repairing those accidents is easy. I kid you not ??? even yours truly, Little Miss Fumblefingers, has done it! All you need is a little spackle compound, a putty knife, some 150-grit sandpaper, and some peel n???stick wallboard tape.

Patching Peeling Paint:
a. Scrape away all the loose paint with a putty knife (A table knife will do in a pinch, but come one! Putty knives are cheap!).
b. Apply spackle to the edges of the remaining paint with the putty knife (that you just bought!).
c. Sand the dry patch with 150-grit sandpaper until it is smooth to the touch.
d. Paint with matching paint (always keep a little bit of your original paint color for small jobs such as these.)

Filling Nail Holes:
a. Using your trusty putty knife, apply a small amount of spackle to the nail hole.
b. Let the spackle dry.
c. Lightly sand the area with the sandpaper.
d. Dampen a sponge and wipe away the dust residue from the patch.
e. Before you paint, touch up the spot with primer.

Filling Shallow Dents and Holes:

a. Again with the putty knife, scrape away any loose plaster, paint or drywall paper.
b. Fill the hole with a small amount of spackle.
c. Using the smallest putty knife you have that will reach from one side of the whole to the other (to avoid making a dent with the knife edges), smooth out the spackle until even with the surrounding sheetrock.
d. Sand the area with sandpaper and prime.

Cracks in Plaster:

a. Scrape away any wall texture or loose plaster with a putty knife (do you know it makes a good pancake turner too?)
b. Use the wallboard tape to reinforce the crack.
c. Apply spackle to barely cover the tape. Don???t make the spackle repair too thick or the spot will just re-crack and you will be right back where you started!
d. If you must, apply a very thin second coat to cover the edges of the tape.
e. Sand lightly with sandpaper and prime. It might be necessary to re-texture if your wall is textured.

There you have it! Simple, isn???t it? Come on, admit it! So with patching holes and dents under your belt, you are ready for another challenge. How about replacing those kitchen cabinets? A new hardwood floor? Just check http://www.homeandgardenmakeover.com to learn how!

How to Sell Cookbooks - Old, Rare, Used, Vintage & Antique Betty Crocker, BH&G & Others

You may be one of those people who have collected cookbooks over the years that ended up, used or unused, gathering dust on bookshelves or in boxes piled up in the attic, garage or basement. Old, rare, classic, vintage, antique and collectible cookbooks can be a hidden source of instant cash. You can easily learn how to sell these old cookbooks.

And many people underestimate the value that these old, collectible cookbooks have, for example Betty Crocker Cookbooks and Better Homes & Gardens Cookbooks, and have never even thought about selling them. There are many other old, valuable cookbooks of course. But for the purpose of this article we'll start with these two well known cookbook publishers' cookbooks. They'll be easier to research.

Do you have any old Better Homes and Gardens Cook Books? How about Betty Crocker Cook Books from the 1950s, 1960s, or popular editions from 1959, 1961 or older? Pie or plaid covers? Betty Crocker New Picture Cookbook or Betty Crocker Boys and Girls Cook Books or any others?

Maybe you do have some of these cookbooks now. Maybe you have some at mom's or grandma's house or even better at great-grandma's house. Perhaps you've seen them at garage sales. A lot of old cookbooks can be valuable -- worth a lot of money. Even those of lesser value may sell for ten times the original price.

Whether you have cook books with binders, hardcovers, plaid covers, or pie covers, you need to do a little research. You'll need to know the title, year of publication, edition (usually printed inside the book in front) and condition, before you can come up with the TRUE value.

You can start by gathering as much of these facts as possible. If any of your old books have been signed by the author or in some cases the illustrator, that'll bring up the price significantly. Then, first of all, go to Google and type in the exact title - for example, 'Betty Crocker Cookbook' and the year published, and see what comes up. Then try using the same phrase with cook book as two words. If you have a plaid or pie cover or other distinct cover, then try again adding 'plaid cover' or 'pie cover'. Do it again and type in the edition if known. You may find some others for sale or that have already sold. Then try again with your variations and add the words - excellent condition, fine condition or good condition.

Next go to eBay and go to the search feature and then 'completed listings'. Search by the category 'cookbooks' and the title of your cookbook and look for similar titles and editions. Only look at those that have sold, to get a feel for the price range. In terms of pricing, ignore the cookbooks that are still for sale. Many factors go into why they didn't sell. Finding sold copies in these cookbook listings will give you a general idea of the range they've sold in. The binding, year and condition are just some of the variable factors. You can do the same with your Better Homes & Gardens Cookbooks. Then try some of the other old, rare, vintage or antique cookbooks that you've collected.

The deciding factor for price in every case will be the condition of the cookbook. Condition is everything. Handle your cookbooks carefully. Collectors and buyers expect cookbooks to have an occasional spot on them. If they're fragile, handle them with white cotton gloves. Never put them in airtight bags or containers, because the moisture content in the pages will cause them to mildew. You can bag them but leave them open. In any case protect them.

So you need to decide on the condition of your cookbooks, find the price range of cookbooks that have sold on completed listings and then decide how to price your book. Be very wary of putting any old, rare, vintage or antique cookbooks on eBay for 99 cents or without a reserve price. You don't want someone walking off with your precious book for just pennies. The sold cookbooks on eBay completed listings have a distinct advantage. You know what people are actually paying for cookbooks and current price ranges.

As for books that list the value of cookbooks, I have them all. But I find them worthless because the values do not reflect what people actually pay for cookbooks or the current prices, whether it is Betty Crocker Cookbooks, Better Home & Gardens Cookbooks or any others. And the cookbook value books go rapidly out of date as time passes since publication.

Besides eBay there are a lot of other ways to sell your cookbooks on the Internet or outside of the Internet. There is too much to go into in this short article. There are many other trade secrets. One easy way -- there is a free cookbook listing service online, for old, rare, vintage or antique cookbooks where you can list your cookbooks for sale, yes free of charge. Collectors and buyers come to the site. You can continue to sell them using other methods and not wait for a buyer to make contact from the site. You can always have your listing removed from the site if it sells or you sell it another way.

You can buy and sell old cookbooks easily once you become familiar with one cookbook and you'll probably be able to find more of them at garage sales. With this basic knowledge of how to sell cookbooks, you've just become a mini-expert on selling cookbooks. So go to your cookbook shelves now and see what you already have and start from there. Once you're an expert on Betty Crocker Cookbooks and Better Homes and Gardens Cookbooks you can start researching other old, rare, classic, vintage, antique and collectible cookbooks.
